Other than flat-pack furniture, most furniture you purchase will come with the bulk of the assembly work already done. However, when receiving a new piece of furniture, such as a sofa or a table, you may find that the legs or other detachable features may have to be installed after shipping. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about furniture assembly.
Where are the legs to my furniture?
To save money on shipping and packing costs, manufacturers often put the legs of a sofa in the lining underneath the couch. Normally when this is done, there’s a bag with the assembly materials located near a zipper in the lining underneath the sofa. If there’s no zipper, try looking in the space on the side of the sofa. For other furniture, you may want to check inside drawers.
What tools do I need to assemble my furniture?
Whether it’s a corner sofa or a new recliner, the tool you will most often need is a good screwdriver. A Phillips-tip or a slotted-tip screwdriver will cover most installations, but it all depends on the type of screws supplied by the manufacturer.
Why don’t the holes on the legs line up with the pre-drilled holes in the frame of the furniture?
Before you panic, try the legs in all available positions on the furniture. If they don’t align in any position, there may be a manufacturing defect.
What if I don’t have all the pieces I need?
The quickest way to get the pieces you need may be to contact the manufacturer and ask them to send you the parts. If you can’t find contact information for the manufacturer of your furniture, contact the retail distributor who sold it to you.
Why is my crib slanted even though I followed the crib assembly instructions completely?
This often happens when you tighten the screws on one side completely prior to tightening the screws on the opposite side. To avoid this, tighten the screws on both sides by hand first; then, after you have finished manually tightening the screws on all sides of the crib, use the screwdriver to finish the job.
Where are the bed assembly instructions?
Many times a manufacturer may feel that the furniture assembly is self-explanatory, or they may forget to include a copy of the instructions with the furniture. Either way, you can often find these instructions by calling the manufacturer or visiting their website.
