Product Care and Maintenance

Quality wood furniture is a significant investment expected to last for generations. To maintain its beauty and help it last, wood furniture needs the right care.  The sheen, or gloss, of the finish ranges from high to low, depending on the piece or collection. The finish protects the wood and adds to its beauty. No finish is totally indestructible. But with regular care, the finish will last much longer, providing years of enjoyment to you.

WOOD AND VENEER

  • wood and veneer are affected by light. For the first 6-8 weeks, when the item is first absorbing the surrounding light, keep the surfaces clear of any objects to avoid permanent marks and circles. At first, new furniture will also need time to absorb light before it will match the tone of your existing furniture

  • water is only to be used in small doses and only in the form of a damp cloth. After wiping, always use a dry cloth

  • wood and veneer are very sensitive to liquids. Wipe up spilled liquids immediately

MARBLE

Marble is a porous material with an open surface that needs protection, and any spilled liquids should be wiped off immediately to avoid stains.

Before delivery we give it a protective layer of silicone wax which reduces the risk of liquids penetrating the marble. However, oily liquids will penetrate the surface more rapidly than water based liquids. Since the marble is influenced by heat and might, in the worst case, crack, you need to protect the surface by using coasters.

General care instructions for marble:

  • spilled liquids should be removed immediately using a clean, neutrally coloured cloth wrung in lukewarm water

  • if a more thorough cleaning is required, only a pH-neutral soap, e.g. soap flakes, may be used. Any acid or alkaline product will degrade the surface

  • use coasters underneath drinks and hot objects to protect the surface

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

  • Wooden parts should be treated with oil before use and subsequently 3-4 times a year (6 times a year in dry weather). Only use oil suitable for outdoor furniture and make sure to follow the instructions given on the specific product.

  • Laminate parts and polyethylene wicker parts should be cleaned with a clean, damp cloth added a bit of detergent. Don’t use cleaning products that will scratch or corrode the surface.

  • Durasint is a hot melt powder coat that provides effective protection against damage and surface corrosion. This makes it ideal for outdoor furniture.

  • Hot objects such as pots, pans and tea lights must never be placed directly on table tops.

  • Outdoor furniture is ideal for outdoor use, but during long periods of bad weather we recommend to shelter or cover it.

UPHOLSTERY IN GENERAL

  • if possible, switch the seat and back cushions on a regular basis to extend the life of your cushions and to ensure even wear over the years

  • cushions with a filling of foam/feathers or fibre should be shaken regularly to ensure form stability

  • make sure the legs are fitted tightly to the sofa and check them on a regular basis

    TEXTILES

Care for textiles by vacuuming or lightly brushing.

Maintain textiles by keeping them away from direct sunlight. Rotate and flip cushions when vacuuming for even wear.

The nap of high pile textiles such as mohairs and velvets may become crushed or lose its original pile height. We recommend light steaming to lift the pile to its original height. The textile should also be brushed with a de-linting brush to maintain its pile.

Water based or solvent cleaner may cause discoloration or staining.

We recommend that stained or soiled textiles be professionally cleaned.

    RUGS

Care for rugs by sweeping or vacuuming.

Maintain rugs by keeping them away from direct sunlight. Occasionally rotate rugs when vacuuming for even wear.

Water based or solvent cleaner may cause discoloration or staining.

We recommend that stained or soiled rugs be professionally cleaned.

    LEATHERS

Leather is a soft porous material that is sometimes uncoated and can easily absorb liquids and oily substances. Avoid saturating the leather with lotion or water for a long period of time.

Care for leather by dusting and lightly vacuuming.

Maintain leathers by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heating vents. Leathers are a natural, “living” material that breathe and move as they wear.

We recommend that stained or soiled leathers be professionally cleaned.

    VELLUM

Vellum is a natural parchment produced from calfskin, lambskin, or kidskin. As it is a skin, there exist naturally occurring variations in pattern, color, and texture, which may be noticeable in side by side panels. A clear coat of sealant is added to protect the vellum from normal use.

Care for vellum by wiping gently with a damp to dry soft cloth, making sure that the skin is completely dried.

Maintain vellum by keeping It away from direct sunlight and heating vents. Vellum is a natural, “living” material and breathes and moves as it wears. Vellum may also darken over time.

We recommend that stained or soiled vellum be professionally cleaned.

    METALS

Never use cleaners with alcohols or solvents on metals.

Only used fine cotton or extra soft cloths.

We recommend that tarnished metals be professionally cleaned.

    CAST BRONZE

Cast bronze pieces are treated with a patina that gives each piece its distinctive color. Although bronze is extremely hard and lasts for centuries, the patina is the most delicate element. Its long-term beauty depends upon proper placement and care.

Clean by using a dry or slightly dampened cloth or a vacuum brush. If soiled, use a light soap with luke-warm water. Wipe clean with a damp dry cloth. Dry with a clean cloth to avoid water spots.

    PATINA METAL

Clean with a very soft, dry cloth or breathe onto a soft cloth then rub gently in the direction of the patina. Do not use abrasive cloths or cleaners as this may scratch or damage the finish.

    PATINA BRONZE

Rubbing in the direction of the patina with a soft cloth will restore the luster to bronze pieces that have been coated with a wax seal (as wax will dull over time from the oils of people’s skin).

    POLISHED METAL

Clean polished metal or polished stainless with a damp cloth. Do not use commercial or heavy duty polishes or waxes, as they may scratch or damage the finish.

Polishes we do recommend are Brasso, Simichrome, or our favorite Flitz; these can be used without inflicting damage even for the unskilled user, unless the polished surface has a wax sealer coat. These polishes will remove the wax while polishing the metal, but the surface would then have to be re-waxed if it is on a metal that needs to be sealed.

    GLASS AND CRYSTAL

Glass and crystal can be cleaned by wiping with a soft damp cloth or glass cleaner with no additives. Apply glass cleaner to a soft cloth rather than directly on to the fixture to avoid overspray that may damage other finishes.
